Whether it was swimming with turtles and snorkelling with rainbow fish or relaxing on the white sand looking out to a clear blue ocean, our day out on the Great Barrier Reef was truly magical
Before we headed off on our great adventure across Canada we made a quick stop in Cairns to visit my sister. Cairns is a nice town and is full of great places but it is also lucky enough to be surrounded by natural beauty including the Atherton Tablelands to the west, Daintree Rainforest to the north and the Great Barrier Reef to the east.
Not only did we spend much needed time with our family but we were able to book a day trip to go out to the reef to snorkel, swim, take a glass bottom boat over vibrant coral, relax on the beach and spend a day enjoying the beautify of this world wonder.
Our trip seemed like it may never happen at first as we had to reschedule multiple times due to the weather. Luckily though we caught an overcast day creating the perfect not to hot but warm enough to swim scenario for our trip. The boat that took us out was light bright and airy with three decks to choose from and the trip was about 45 minutes each way with complimentary tea and coffee. This took us out to a beautiful little island with cafes and secluded beaches perfect for snorkelling.
The highlight by far was when we were snorkelling on the reef and found a lone turtle swimming around. We were able to get super close and thanks to an underwater camera we loaned from my sister we got a few shots of him before he swam away. It was really difficult to wipe the smile off our faces after such an extraordinary experience.
