Jess's Birthday & Christmas Markets

On the 24th of November Jess had her first Canadian birthday. It was meant to be a fantastic day where we explored the city and I spoiled her rotten, Unfortunately due to working to midnight the night before and then working til 11pm that night due to Black Friday sales at work, Jess was left all alone for most of her birthday.

However we both decided that Saturday the 25th was the day we were to celebrate her birthday and we had plenty of activities to keep us busy. We began our day with coffee and cake at our favourite café in Gastown called Pure Bread. Not only do they sell a mouth watering selections of cakes and pastries but they also have the closest thing to decent coffee that we have found since we got here.

Once we had fuelled ourselves with coffee and cake we moved in to Candyland, a free Christmas themed festival located in Yaletown (the swanky part of town). Candyland had an assortment of cool things to see and do including food trucks, marching bands, ice scultures and Santa Claus. There were even giant polar bears roaming the streets which kept many of the children entertained.

Our day continued with a trip to the movies to see Justice League. Despite all the negative reviews from the critics and many other people, we both had a great time and enjoyed the movie. It was also a great pit stop to get out of the cold for a few hours before attacking the next part of our hectic day.

Our day concluded with a trip to the Vancouver Christmas Market, a German style Christmas market located at the site where the Olympic Cauldron rests from the 2010 Winter Olympics. Our trip to the markets took us down Burrard Street which is well known for having beautiful Christmas light displays which put a huge smile on our faces.

When we arrived at the markets the first stop was to the Gluwhein tent to get some hot mulled wine to take the edge of the frosty night. This was followed by a trip to the German beer tent to try out some delicious German beer and for Jess to try out a cheese pretzel the size of your head. We then walked around looking at all the craft stalls and into a massive tent filled with more Christmas decorations than we had ever seen before. Once we had finished in the tent, it was time to pick up some dinner from the many food vendors (Jess had Bratwurst and I had pulled pork), have a hot chocolate and then it was time to go home to bed after a very exciting and fun filled day.
