Bowen Island/Easter

Being away from friends and family is hard at the best of times but obviously we were going to notice more at Easter when normally we would be spending the long weekend surrounded by family and friends. Luckily for us, our friend Connor at work had been corrupted into having a party at his parents house on Bowen Island on Easter Saturday. Bowen Island is located about 20 minutes by ferry from the coast of Vancouver so we had to stay the night and be surrounded by our work friends before catching the ferry home on Easter Sunday.

We set off in the afternoon on Easter Saturday to catch the bus from the city out to the ferry terminal. According to Google Maps this should only have taken about half an hour. What Google Maps didn't know, was that the Vancouver Canucks were playing a rare afternoon game that day which had just finished meaning there was a lot more people trying to get to the ferry terminal than usual. We tried to catch the bus from the second stop in its trip as it was closer to the train we got off. However there was about one hundred people at this stop and a completely full bus didn't even stop, so we decided to try our luck at the first stop.

After a 15 minute wait, we were the last passengers allowed on the bus. With our bodies sandwiched between the driver and the door of the bus we set off on our adventure. Within half an hour we were at the ferry terminal and ready to hop on the ferry to take us to Bowen Island. As the ferry also allowed cars to drive on and park, we hitched a ride with some of the girls from work and enjoyed the ride to the island.

Once we arrived at the island it was another 5-10 minute drive to Connors house where we met up with our other friends from work and the party commenced. Most people brought along some form of chips, dips or other party food so we were well supplied whilst we played numerous games of beer pong, Jenga and poker as well as catching up and talking the hours away. By about 2am we made our way downstairs and fell asleep in the bed we had been allocated.

The next morning (Easter Sunday) Jess and I were the last people to leave, mainly due to the fact that a large portion of the other partygoers had to get back for work at 11am. Instead of heading straight back on the ferry we decided to have breakfast in town at a delicious little café called The Snug on Bowen. We were treated to the special of the day which was pulled pork eggs benedict and some of the best coffee we had tasted since arriving in Canada.

Once breakfast was finished we still had a while before the next ferry so we decided to explore the island a bit more. The island had many nice gardens and flowers for us to look at as well as a bookshelf at the ferry for those who had long periods to wait for the next ferry. Once it got closer to midday we lined up for the ferry and headed back to Vancouver, thankful to have explored a new place and to have spent such a great weekend with some very good friends.
