Birthdays and Anniversaries

The months of October and November are always a little bit busier than normal for us as October 24th is our wedding anniversary and November 24th is Jess' birthday. As we had both been working a lot and on different shift schedules, we used these events as good reasons to go out and explore Calgary together and turn them into separate multi day celebrations.

Our first celebration for our third wedding anniversary was a few days beforehand when Jess and I both had the day off together so we decided to head into downtown Calgary for brunch. We settled on a nice looking place called OEB which wasn't overly busy as it was a Monday, but usually has an enormous lines on weekends. After seeing the breakfast poutine Jess ordered which consisted of lobster, potato wedges and hollandaise sauce, I can understand why.

The next stop on the anniversary celebrations was actually the day after our anniversary when we went to go and see the Pittsburgh Penguins play against the Calgary Flames in the NHL. Before the game we headed to a pub in downtown Calgary called the Unicorn where we ordered drinks and pizzas to get us ready for the big game. Having supported the Penguins for years from Australia and having witnessed them lose when we saw them live for the first time in Vancouver, we were very eager to see them have a win. However even the most optimistic supporter would have expected the game we witnessed. Within the first 20 minutes, the Penguins were 3-0 up and after 2 periods were up 7-0. The final result was a 9-1 victory to the Penguins which was an amazing anniversary present for Jess and I.

Next and final stop on the anniversary was the following Sunday when we both had the day free and decided to explore more of downtown Calgary which we hadnt yet gotten around to exploring. We toured up an down 17th Avenue which is the premier entertainment area with lots of bars and places to eat as well as walking around the foreshore of the Bow river and walking across the Peace Bridge which is truly beautiful at dusk.

Our last big celebration in Calgary was a month later for Jess' birthday. Poor Jess has been shafted both years on her birthday as it is so close to Black Friday, either her or I have had to work on her birthday. This year Jess had a 6am to 2:30 pm shift, after which I met her at work and we went to the movies to see Wreck It Ralph 2 (which is amazing and everyone should go see). After this we headed into downtown and had a nice dinner before heading back home for some much needed rest.
